Was lief damals schief?

He also began his career in Germany with the FCS. Jonathan Akpoborie takes us for our FCS-Forum with him to his stations in the football and how he has experienced the time in his clubs.

Dear Mr. Akpoborie, please, tell us about the way to win the under 16 world cup 1985 for Nigeria. How was the tournament in your view?

Jonathan Akpoborie: I was still a little boy in that tournament. We went into that tournament as underdogs. Our first goal was to qualify from our group. From qualifying, we now beat Hungary in the quarter final. In the semi final, we found out we were going to play Guinea. Our motivation was not coming all this way to lose to a fellow African country. The game was close, but we won on penalties. Against Germany in the final, was so special. Our counter attacking strategy was the best weapon that worked for us. We did not use our chances very well, because at halftime, we could have been up by 3 goals. But in the end we won by two solid goals. That tournament gave me the confidence that I could survive professional football in Europe.

A little bit later, you moved from the club Julius Berger Lagos (now Bridge Football Club) into the USA to the Brooklyn College, where you have gotten a sport stipend. How was the time there?

JA: America was a learning curve for me and I used it very well. At Brooklyn College, we won the New York State NCAA title and lost in the semi final of the national soccer tournament. No other team in that school has done that ever before. It was from there I moved to Saarbrücken.

After the time in the USA, your first club in Germany was as you have said the 1. FC Saarbrücken in 1990. Please, how would you describe these two years in the Saarland? What have you learned there and how was the atmosphere in the team?

JA: Saarbrücken was bitter sweet. I was in Germany for the first time and I could not understand the language. The culture also was a big problem for me, so I had to learn the hard way. It was also my first professional contract. So everything was running so fast, all at the same time. There were decisions I had to make and some affected my football from outside the field. But it was all a very good experience for me in the long run. Although I would have loved to do more for the FCS fans.

You moved to Jena in 1992. You have also played later for the Stuttgarter Kickers, Waldhof Mannheim, Hansa Rostock, the VfB Stuttgart and Wolfsburg. Please take us with you to these different clubs in your career. What were remarkable moments in this time and why?

JA: The move to Jena came at just the right time. I learnt how to speak German in just a short time in Jena, and I was more integrated into the team and I scored more goals for the team. It was like a home coming for me. As a team, we could not really replicate what we did in the first season we were together, so I left for the Stuttgarter Kickers after the second season.

At the Kickers, they wanted to gain promotion into the second division, so our work was cut out for us. We had a very expensive squad, but most of the team did not really like the coach. But I felt at home for the first time in Germany. The season did not really start well for me in terms of goals scored, but I was playing very well. After the winter break, the goals started coming. I scored 37 goals in 32 games for kickers. By far the most comfortable place I had felt in Germany, even though we did not get that promotion. I then had to leave for Waldhof Mannheim.

We all thought Mannheim had qualified for the 1. Bundesliga so I signed for them, only for them not to qualify. Mannheim was also a very good city for me and I continued where I stopped at the Kickers. The team was good and we had a very good tactical coach also in Uli Stielike. But the team could not really bring that performance into the field. I scored my goals as usual, but had to leave for a 1. Bundesliga team in winter. There were about six offers from the Bundesliga, thanks to Roger Wittmann. He decided for me to move to Rostock and I did.

Rostock was just like the Stuttgarter Kickers, I felt at home. The players made me feel very comfortable and the goals started coming from day one. The coach was fantastic also. I had a fantastic time at Rostock.

I chose to move to Stuttgart with so many offers coming through Roger. He was fantastic at his job. The football at Rostock was also very good, but they had some problems with finance so I had to move at the end of the second season.

Giovane Elber was leaving VfB Stuttgart, so I was the replacement that was bought by coach Joachim Löw. It was a fantastic experience for me. The first time in the European cup winners cup and the Bundesliga. Training was always fun and we got more busy because of the addition of the European competition. The only problem we had at Stuttgart was that the team was not well supported by the fans. They made the team so nervous most of the time on the field. We were more comfortable to play our away games better than the home games, especially the European games. Hence we qualified for the final that year. In all Stuttgart was a fantastic experience for me.

Wolfsburg came on the last day of the second season at Stuttgart, I would not say no. Their project was fantastic, so I gave consent for Roger to handle. From day one, it was all concentration for Wolfsburg. I scored some amazing goals there, even at Rostock, too. The crowd, the stadium and the city. We all had memorable times there and I will never forget for the rest of my life.

The circle was closed with the move back to the FCS 2001, but with only a few games. What went wrong at this time?

JA: I did not have a very good comeback to Saarbrücken because of injuries and I eventually had to retire because of that. I really wish I could have been able to give the fans what they would have expected to see from me, but for my injury.

After the end of your career, what have you done in the last years?

JA: We own a small player management company in Zürich. Stars4all and I work with this company now.

Do you still follow the FCS and do you have a few words for the fans of the 1. FC Saarbrücken?

JA: Yes, I do. And I am hoping they get promoted in the next season.

    Many thanks for the interview!
